The Expansion of Modern Grocery Retailing and Trade in Developing Countries: Over the past few decades, modern grocery retailing has been expanding rapidly in developing countries. The implications for food demand and trade are influenced by the extent to which modern food retailers focus primarily on growing preferences for nonprice characteristics, such as dietary diversity, convenience, and quality, as opposed to introducing supply chain efficiencies that may reduce real food prices over time. Based on a data set of 103 developing countries, there is suggestive evidence that the expansion has been associated with growth in demand for nonprice characteristics, such as convenience in food shopping and preparation. World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates: The World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report provides USDA’s comprehensive forecasts of supply and demand for major U.S. and global crops and U.S. livestock. The report gathers information from a number of statistical reports published by USDA and other government agencies, and provides a framework for additional USDA reports. The WASDE report is available in PDF, XML, and Excel formats.
Aquaculture Data: Aquaculture is the production of aquatic animals and plants under controlled conditions for all or part of their lifecycle. This data product provides statistics on domestically grown catfish and trout and U.S. imports and exports of fish and shellfish that may be products of aquaculture, such as salmon, shrimp, and oysters. Site has both recent and historical (back 5-7 years) data in either Excel or .PDF format.
Meat Price Spreads: This data set provides monthly average price values and the differences among those values, at the farm, wholesale, and retail stages of the production and marketing chain for selected cuts of beef, pork, and broilers. In addition, retail prices are provided for beef and pork cuts, turkey, whole chickens, eggs, and dairy products. Interesting to see historical relationship between what the farmer, wholesaler and retailer make.
International Food Security Assessment, 2011-21: Food security in Asia and the Latin America and the Caribbean region is projected to improve, whereas food security in Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to deteriorate. Food-insecure people are defined as those consuming less than the nutritional target of roughly 2,100 calories per day per person.
Food Expenditure Tables: Analysis of food expenditures provides valuable information about how consumers spend their food dollar, and how their consumption patterns change over time. ERS has updated a series of tables on food expenditures to 2010, showing that total food expenditures for all food consumed in the U.S. was $1,240.4 billion in 2010 which is a 3.4-percent increase from $1,199.8 billion in 2009.
Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System: The Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System compiled by USDA’s Economic Research Service includes three distinct but related data series on food and nutrients available for consumption. The data serve as popular proxies for actual consumption in the United States. This historical series measures the national food supply of several hundred foods, and it is the only source of time series data on food availability in the country.
Latest U.S. Agricultural Trade Data: USDA has summarized the latest U.S. agricultural trade statistics in the following table, using the most recent data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce. U.S. Agricultural Trade Data Update: Provides a monthly update of year-to-date quantities and values of U.S. agricultural exports and imports. It also provides data on leading destination countries for exports and import source countries.
